Interviews Tips for Your Book Research
There's a lot of research and creative process that goes into writing a book.
Sometimes, during the research, you may have to interview people to gain more insight into your topic. Depending on the type of book you're writing, you can:
☆Interview professionals amd experts whose commentaries can serve as end-chapter notes.
☆Interview individuals whose experiences can be used as illustrations or case studies in your book.
☆Interview people who have first-hand experience of the topic you’re writing and can give an eye-witness account of the events.
To get the best content out of these interviews, here's what you can do:
1. Avoid Text-Based Interview
Resist the urge to conduct your interviews via text. You can send the interview questions to your sources via email, text, or dm, so they can prepare ahead. But do not collect responses through that means.
Interviews work better when you speak to people either on the phone, through a video call, or in person. It gives you the chance to capture their emotions, ask more follow-up questions, tease out the juicy details, and record the conversation for future reference.
2. Establish Rapport With Your Source
Don't just bulldoze your source with lots of serious questions like a journalist. Find a subject that can help you connect with them on a personal level. It could be their family, interests, or hobby. This will ease the tension and make them feel comfort to share more.
3. Be Prepared
Before you approach your source, prepare your questions. Take the time to do proper research to learn about your source and the topic. This will help you come up with intelligent questions.
4. Be Brief With Your Questioning
Please, do not confuse your source with long questions.
You know those questions that sound like PhD thesis. After rambling, the interviewee starts at you blankly and asks, "What was the question again?"😂
Please, don't bore your source with your long talk. Keep the questions simple and direct.
Remember, this interview is an opportunity to learn more about your topic and get additional resource/ideas for your book.
Make sure you pay rapt attention, immerse yourself in the conversion, and find out what’s on their mind.
Cheers to writing a masterpiece🥂
